What is a UK ETA?
A UK electronic travel authorisation (ETA) gives eligible travellers permission to travel to the UK. It is linked electronically to the passport used in the application. It is not a visa, and you must still meet the conditions for entry when you arrive.
Who needs one?
Whether you need an ETA depends on your nationality, immigration status and travel plans. Many visa-exempt visitors need one for tourism, visiting family, business visits or other permitted short stays. Every traveller who needs an ETA must have their own, including children and babies.
British and Irish citizens do not need an ETA. People who already have permission to live, work or study in the UK, or a valid UK visa, are generally exempt. Airside transit without passing UK border control does not require an ETA. Other exemptions apply; use the official checker.
Before you apply
Have the following ready, and use the same passport for your application and your journey.
- The valid passport you will travel with.
- Access to an email address for the decision.
- A clear passport image and a suitable face photo, as required by the official process.
- A payment method for the government fee.
- Accurate answers about your identity, travel and suitability.
Know what your authorisation allows
An ETA does not allow you to take a job in the UK, live in the UK through frequent visits, or stay beyond the permitted period. Different rules apply to permitted paid engagements and the Creative Worker concession. Check the official conditions for your activity.
Fees and processing, explained
Government fee: £20. Official application fee. Private service fees are separate.
GOV.UK says you will usually receive a decision within a day, but you should allow up to 3 working days. Some cases may take longer. Wait for a decision before travelling. Applying through a private website does not produce a faster government decision.
ETA Atlas service pricing is not yet set. We do not accept payments on this website. Any future service fee must be shown separately from government fees, with a full total before you pay.
Your direct option: You do not need to use a private service. Apply on the official government website and pay only the government charges that apply to you.
